Arriving by plane from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

By public transportation: from the train station of Schiphol airport, take any train stopping at Amsterdam Zuid (about 7 minutes from the airport). Train tickets must be purchased in advance at an NS ticket counter or one of the yellow-blue ticket machines in the main hall of the airport. (The fare is € 2,50 for a one way ticket.) At train station Amsterdam Zuid, take tram number 5 in the direction of Amstelveen and get off at De Boelelaan/VU (which is the first stop from the train station). If you prefer a short walk (about five minutes), go in the direction your train came from, down the flight of stairs at the end of the platform and follow the signs to the Vrije Universiteit (it's in the direction of the gas station). You should be able to spot the main building already: it's big and grey and sports a blue griffin.
By taxi: a taxi ride from Schiphol to the Vrije Universiteit can cost between 35 and 40 euros.

Arriving by train from Central Station

By tram: from the tram station in front of the central station, take tram number 5 and get off at De Boelelaan/VU.
By metro: from the metro station situated under central station (entrance to the metro is right in front of the entrance to the station), take number 51 and get off at De Boelelaan/VU.

Tickets for all forms of public transportation in Amsterdam are available at all train stations (go to 'Kiosk' or 'AKO'), post offices, and supermarkets in the form of a 'strippenkaart' (see here and here), i.e., a ticket for multiple rides, which must be validated at the start of the ride by stamping the appropriate amount of 'strips' (which depends on the number of 'zones' you travel through) in the yellow machines at the platform entrances or onboard. Tram and bus drivers will usually assist you in stamping the appropriate amount, but in metros you should take care of it yourself. A 15-strips strippenkaart costs € 6,80.
